Responsible AI
The practice of developing and deploying AI systems that are fair, transparent, accountable, safe, and aligned with human values and societal wellbeing.
Responsible AI is a broad term encompassing principles and practices for developing AI ethically. It typically includes:
- Fairness: AI systems should not discriminate - Transparency: AI decisions should be explainable - Accountability: someone should be responsible for AI outcomes - Safety: AI systems should not cause harm - Privacy: AI systems should protect personal data - Human oversight: humans should maintain appropriate control
Responsible AI is primarily focused on the development and design of AI systems. AI governance is focused on the institutional oversight and enforcement mechanisms. Both are necessary: responsible AI ensures the technology is built well; AI governance ensures the institution manages it well.
How Constellation handles this
Constellation provides the governance infrastructure that makes responsible AI enforceable. Principles without enforcement are aspirational; principles backed by structural constraints are operational.
